Glorious spring ushers in Easter celebrations. It’s a time of sunrise church services, snow-white lilies, bunnies, baskets, eggs and new dresses. Celebrated in a religious or secular fashion, family and friends gather for beloved customs and traditions. Get the kids chopping the carrots and glazing the ham, or brunch out at a Charlotte restaurant. Enjoy the fresh, new colors of a spring-time landscape while running for global causes. It’s a wonderful season to celebrate the newness of life!Some families gather in a special place for an Easter morning breakfast. Bring in fresh-picked flowers, make some hot cross buns, or read the Easter story to the little ones. Take time to enjoy the family and a circle of friends. Here are some weekend ideas in the Charlotte area:

Narrow Way Theatre is located on the North and South Carolina border, just outside of Charlotte. This is a Broadway style show sure to thrill the young and old. It is a biblical portrayal of the resurrection from creation to Revelation featuring musicians, dancers, singers and even live animals. A cast of children, dressed as animals, appear in the beginning during the creation scene. There is a fight scene depicting heavenly warfare between demons and angels. It is advised that parents should prepare young children for this scene, and use discretion. Though, it is a most exciting portion of the production featuring stage martial arts, combat choreography. The scene is enhanced with leaping flames from fire pots, fog and dramatic lighting. It is an original production, written and staged, by theatre founders Rebecca Martin and Yvonne Clark. Prior to the show, dinner is served by the performance cast. It includes ribs, vegetable blend wild rice, squash, followed by a dessert combo of Devil’s Food and Angel Food cake.

Latta Plantation is about 12 miles to the northwest of Charlotte. Short-staple cotton was the cash crop grown at Latta during the 19th century. It still grows there today, as part of educational programs, workshops and special events. Over 17,000 school kids visit the plantation annually. The Easter Egg Hunt is a favorite for the area. Ages 1 to 10 will be hunting for candy-filled eggs all across the grounds. Some of the eggs will contain grand prizes, such as summer camp scholarships and family memberships. There’s live entertainment and crafts at the carriage barn. Before or after the hunt, visit the farm animals. They include Oreo, the donkey, a Morgan horse, Costswold sheep and a Red Devon cow. Pack a picnic lunch with brightly-colored hard boiled eggs, and enjoy some family time! Registration is taken online.

Passages Interactive Bible Exhibit

Passages is collection of over 400 of the world’s rarest artifacts and biblical texts. The pieces were collected by the Green family, owners of the Hobby Lobby craft retail chain. Their desire was to make these valuable pieces accessible to the public. The family-friendly exhibit began in Oklahoma and has traveled to Atlanta, St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City and now, Charlotte. The admission price for children includes an audio tour guide featuring Louie the Lion. The exhibit features a Jewish Scribe Room containing torah cases, temple lamps, scrolls and highlights an actual fragment from a Dead Sea Scroll of Genesis. The Christian Scribe Room contains one of the earliest complete bibles in the world and surviving scriptures in Greek. There is a re-creation of Gutenberg’s print shop with hands-on type setting activity for kids and adults. Guests can practice translating scripture in Jerome’s Cave. It really does resemble a Kumeron cave. There is a beautifully detailed guide book available for purchase from the gift shop. This could very well be a once in a lifetime opportunity!

The Twelve In Twelve race and egg hunt are to raise funds, supplies and awareness for humanitarian projects around the world. J.D. Lewis and his two sons live in Charlotte. Grateful for the good life, one of his sons wanted to come up with a way to help those less fortunate. Non-profit Twelve In Twelve was born and kicked off with a worldwide tour, networking with other organizations helping those in need. This race will raise funds for school art supplies, sports programs and more in Rwanda, Haiti and Thailand. Run or walk through the trails at the Whitewater Center. No pressure here — after all, it’s the cause that counts! Let the kids participate in the Bunny Hop walk/run. The egg hunt will take place on a little island in the middle of a lake. The Easter Bunny will lead off the hop across the bridge. The island will be loaded with eggs!
